Among the notable Ashtakam authors stands Adi Shankaracharya, who meticulously constructed an Ashtakam cycle. This cycle comprises a series of Ashtakam, each dedicated to a specific deity. These verses are designed to be appreciated as individual, fully realized poems while also forming a cohesive poetic work encompassing all the individual Ashtakam. Adi Shankaracharya’s contributions encompass over thirty Ashtakam, each devoted to various deities as expressions of dedication (Stuti).

Within an Ashtakam, the quatrains, usually consisting of four lines, occasionally conclude abruptly. Alternatively, some may conclude with a couplet, a pair of lines. These quatrains allow poets to establish a theme and, in the final lines, potentially resolve it or leave it open-ended. On occasion, the concluding couplet may also contain self-identifying elements of the poet. The structural integrity adheres to the rules of meter, rendering it suitable for recitation and classical singing. Nonetheless, several Ashtakam deviates from the conventional structure.

who is the beautiful Gopala of Vrindavana, with Vanamala (garland of forest flowers) hanging on his chest and with large eyes captivating everyone; whose very form removes the sufferings of his devotees,
who is the bright moon of Vrindavana, and a source of immense joy; who is the embodiment of supreme bliss himself and bears the earth within him,
who is the most beloved Ghanashyama (literally dark-colored), who is self-satisfied by being absorbed within his own divine nature, and extremely pleasing, inspiring love and affection from all,
