Pratyangira Devi Homam In Sanskrit And English

Pratyangira Devi Homam/Havan – Why and When?

Secrets concealed in many obscure and rare to obtain tantras, have come to light in recent years, following a surge and change in the mindset of scholars as well as devotees, in unveiling the secrets and utilizing the same for the greater good of mankind. There are many secret mantras, stotras and prayoga-s (procedures) that were hidden from the common folk, to ensure that there is no misutilization for personal gains and inducing harm to others. Despite the many good intentions, black magic rites and other procedures are still in use, although mostly relegated to the rural areas and other remote parts. The questions remain, as to how do we protect ourselves against various threats caused by black magic and other procedures performed by our enemies? The regular visits to religious places of worship and performing good deeds etc. simply do not size up and sometimes things can go to such an extent, that the ability to respond and rise to face the threats itself, may be restricted in us.

Besides black magic, we also live in a very competitive world and face many challenges on the home, work and health standpoints. How do we emerge victorious when faced against insurmountable obstacles and completely unfavorable odds? This is when, we seek the intervention of fierce and terrific deities, also referred as ugra devatas. One such ugra devata is Śrī Pratyaṅgira devi.

The Divine Mother Kali, represents time and our very existence and reflection in the fabric of time and space. When we start reflecting on how we have utilized or misutilized the time on our hands, the deeds we performed etc and continue to ponder on the very notion of our existence, She opens up and clears our understanding of what is True and what is False and helps us cross the ocean of maya and into Her realm. A very aggressive aspect of Kali devi is Bhadra Kali and the fiercest form of Bhadra Kali is Śrī Pratyaṅgira Devi. The fierceness signifies the aggression with which She approaches to overhaul our karmas.

Śrī Pratyaṅgira Devi is the powerhouse of energy and considered the protector of the Atharvana veda and all its treasured secret mantras. Such is Her might and power, that She is hailed as the bestower of victory, even against impossible odds. It is said that Indrajit, the son of Ravana, was a great devotee of Her and has also composed Her Jagan Maṅgala Kavacam. In order to defeat Lord Rama and his army, he sits down to perform Her sadhana and Homam, which is then disrupted by Lord Hanuman, to ensure that he does not gain the desired power. She is also known as Siddhilaksmī in the North Indian region. She is one of the main deities for the royal family of Nepal and many other well to do families.

In today’s world, it has become very common for politicians seeking victory over their opponents and also for businessmen, looking to increase their gains and knock off their adversaries and competition, to invoke Her grace through the popular Homam and other rk related rituals. Śrī Pratyaṅgira Devi homam can be performed by the initiates of Her mantra and the procedures have been detailed in the short and long posts on this website. Those who are not initiated into Her mantras can also choose to perform the homam and substitute the mantra portion with Her Astottara namavali. Ideally, the Homam should be performed on the new moon dark night – Amavasya and/or on the full moon night – Pournami. When the problems persist, one should consider performing the mantra on a daily or regular basis also. It is understood, that we are invoking Her during the most difficult periods to overcome major crises and for Her initiates, it is purely for offering devotion and pleasing Her.

Most important thing is that the homam should be invoked with full devotion and faith. This is the main dravya (material) for the Homam. Other dravyas, include whole red chilies for vanquishing enemies and opposition, meat and liquor or their substitutes, ghee (clarified butter), fire sticks and general homam material available at stores can be used. The long sticks called Sruva and Sruci used in Homam/Havan should also be made available or substituted with long wooden spoons, to avoid the danger of injuring ourselves with burns etc.
